3 Out of 5 Stars
After the usual record company shenanigans of being told to work and rework material, Rooney jumped ship to indie-land for"Eureka." And yet, they still sound like a power-pop band with few peers. Free of outside interference, the only thing missing seems to be overproduction; the bulk of "Eureka" is harmony rich five piece pop.
What has changed is that the band sounds a bit more matured lyrically. "Stars and Stripes" echoes John Mayer's "Waiting for The World to Change" in tone, but more like The Raspberries in sound. "Not In My House" is a pop-punisher for a bad girl (and for those with power-pop jones, echoes The Shoes' "I Don't Miss You"). I keep thinking it would be a great sports program song for all spoiled plays, especially after that winter Olympics commercial where the curling announcer kept shouting the title.
Elsewhere, Rooney continues their cool mixture of Weezer via Jellyfish, especially on the terrific "Only Friend." They go all in for the Beach Boys on the melancholy "Into The Blue." There's a little less sugar than on Rooney's previous "Calling The World," and that makes "Eureka" a more satisfying consistent listen. They made just enough tweaks to show they've grown up a bit without jumping the shark completely; if you thought OK Go should have shelved "Of The Blue Colour Of The Sky" and gone back to power-pop, "Eureka" will likely satisfy.
