Good selection of The Rooster Haired Rocker
3 Out Of 5 Stars
Rod Stewart used to rock. He even used to create great radio ready singles. Despite his plunge into Platinum Vegas Lounge act with his series of "Songbook" albums, at one time he was a strutting, blues barking definition of rock and roll spirit. While this single disc doesn't really go far enough in defining just how great Stewart used to be, for a casual set, it hits plenty of highlights.
There are the classic early songs like "Maggie May" and "You Wear It Well." There's the showboat from the seventies that released classic kitsch like "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" and "Tonight's The Night." Mostly, the disc sticks to Rod's 80's hit machine period, which was no slouch time, either. Both "Rhythm of My Heart" and Tom Waits' "Downtown Train" kept Stewart on the charts with excellent material.
This disc also contains a couple surprises, like his 90's re-recording of The Faces' "Ooh La La" and the powerful "My Heart Can't Tell Me No." All together, a good, quick mix of all good songs, even if a little short at 16 count. There's also plenty of serious omissions, like "Infatuation," "The Killing of Georgie" or maybe a Faces track or two ("Stay With Me" or "Cindy Incidentally" would have been nice). There is a decent two disc best of that contains a few more songs, which you may want to splurge for if you're really interested.
